CHARM
Center for Hard to Recycle Materials

CHARM now open for the 2010 season

What is CHARM?

CHARM is the Logan County 'Center for Hard to Recycle Materials' that can CHARM you & the environment.

In place of the former one-day-a-year collection of only Household Hazardous Wastes at the Fair Grounds, CHARM offers the convenience of a permanent drive-thru service center open 16 times between Earth Day, April 21 and October, 2010 for residents of Logan County.  The list of materials we collect changes with the changing needs of society.

What You Can Recycle at CHARM

CHARM Collection Service will accept the following materials from Logan County residents:

CHARM open dates and hours of operation.

CHARM will be open rain or shine; it is a drive thru facility under cover.  No reservations are necessary.  Drive to the CHARM facility; follow the route marked with traffic cones on the property.  Allow us to unload your vehicle, weigh materials where there is a per pound charge, receive your payment (if any), provide you with a receipt, and you are on your way.

Payments We Accept. Payments are accepted in cash or check made out to the Logan County Treasurer.  No credit cards accepted.

If you have any questions about materials accepted, or fees, carefully read instructions on this web site or call 599-1253.

Batteries — FEE:  No fee

  • All batteries are accepted from small button batteries, including all regular household flashlight batteries, boat, motorcycle and car batteries, to all rechargeable batteries.

CAUTION !!

All 9 volt batteries and all rechargeable batteries must have their terminals taped with non-conductive electrical tape.  Nationally a handful of trucks transporting batteries have burned on highways in recent years (one last fall in Columbus on the freeway), caused by the terminals of rechargeable batteries coming into contact with each other resulting in intense heat and fire.  The small square batteries from smoke detectors can cause this kind of fire.  In Logan County we had a recent report of several 9 volt batteries in a plastic bag melting the bag and almost igniting the kitchen counter. Fortunately the homeowner discovered this before a fire started.  He just finished changing the batteries in his smoke detectors.

Please bring small batteries in a clear plastic bag or zip-lock bag.

Scrap Tires — Fees Apply

In 2010 the Department of Natural Resources is offering tire amnesty grants to governmental agencies collecting scrap tires.   Logan County has applied for one of these competitive grants, but will not receive a response until June, with funding starting in July.  If our grant request is approved and fully funded it may cover half the cost of the fees below after July.  If the grant request is not approved the fees below will apply throughout our collection season.

Nine Tires Maximum.  Residents may transport up to nine tires per load to the Collection Service Center.  Citizens may not transport more than 9 tires without an Ohio transporter's license.

Tires may be on or off rim.

  • Misc. small tires — FEE: $1.50 each
  • Passenger car —  FEE: $2.50 each
  • Pick-up truck — FEE: $3.50 each
  • Semi-truck — FEE:  $9.00 each

All tires recycled through this service are transported to a shredding operation in Michigan where they are made into useful products.
