Clean Sweep of Great Miami River 2010 a Success
August 10, 2010 on 2:36 pm | In clean sweep, Great Miami River, Logan County, Solid Waste District, Volunteers | No CommentsForty-eight volunteers paddled, slogged, pushed, and pulled twenty canoes loaded with trash and debris from the Great Miami River in Logan County on July 24 as part of Clean Sweep of the Great Miami River 2010. Teams of eight to ten volunteers covered small sections of 12.5 miles of the river collecting 2,045 pounds of trash, including 6 scrap tires. In some of the sections volunteers were confronted with log jams and tree falls requiring the teams to push or carry each loaded canoe over the obstruction.
Volunteers were treated to a light breakfast and after safety and canoe briefings were transported to pre-determined drop off locations with their team. About three hours later the team arrived at their pick-up destination with all the debris and trash they could carry in the canoes.
Several groups participated this year along with individuals. Several family groups worked together while the Logan County Family Court team consisted of probation officers, several juveniles, and Judge Douglas Chamberlain. Honda Hero Volunteers brought a team of eleven to clean a 3.5 mile section of the river.
After the Sweep all volunteers were treated to a lunch and received a specially designed t-shirt to commemorate their accomplishment.
The Logan County effort is part of a much larger undertaking, the Clean Sweep of the Great Miami River from Indian Lake to the Ohio River. This year the event drew 1385 volunteers and removed 65,4880 pounds of trash from the river, including 221 scrap tires. Major sponsors of the Clean Sweep of the GMR are Cargill, Veolia, Miami Conservancy District, Atlantis, McDonalds, and the I-75 Newspapers. The Logan County section is sponsored and organized by the Logan County Solid Waste Management District.
