Monitors Provide Valuable Assistance in Recycling Effort

Each of the ten neighborhood recycling centers in Logan County has a volunteer Monitor who visits the site regularly and is the eyes and ears of the Solid Waste District.  A Monitor visits “their” recycling center at least three times a week to make observations and report those observations to the Solid Waste District headquarters.  Monitors make note of how much remaining space is available in each of the three 33-yd. roll-off container at each site,  whether illegal dumping has occurred in roll-offs, in the PAYT trash containers, or anywhere else at the center.  They note whether the vending machine on site needs more PAYT bags in its racks for sale.  They note whether the handi-capped accessible totters need servicing.

Monitors meet for training in December, 2009

Upon returning home the monitors fire up their computers and log onto internet connecting with the SWD website where a special page allows them to quickly complete a form about their observations.  The electronic report is uploaded instantly to our website and is checked several times daily by our office staff , our roll-off driver, and our deputy.  In addition, whenever a monitor reports that a roll-off container is 99% full, or hits the button indicating illegal dumping has occurred, an immediate email alert is sent to the roll-off drive and deputy telling them of the need for immediate service.  In the case of illegal dumping monitors also make cell phone calls to the SWD Deputy Sheriff.

This monitoring system saves valuable fuel, travel time, and expensive trips around the county previously needed to assess what was happening at the growing number of recycling centers.  The Monitor system has been fully operations since the fall of 2009.  The Monitors are proving to be a valuable asset as the District attempts to provide convenient and accessible recycling services to the public.
