The Solid Waste District opened it third full-time Recycling Center September 25, 2008 in Bellefontaine on South
Detroit Street. This Center is a cooperative venture with the City of Bellefontaine, built on City property. Opening day ceremonies were attended by Mayor Adam Brannon, Safety/Service Director Jim Holycross, Logan County Commissioners John Bayliss, David Knight, Jack Reser, and Solid Waste District staff led by Coordinator Alan Hale.
This Center is intended to serve the many people who work in Bellefontaine but live out in the county where they lack recycing services. The Center is open to anyone needing recycling services. Unlike its counterparts at Indian Lake this site does not yet contain the pay-as-you-throw (PAYT) trash option, but that may be considered at a later time as the District and City gain experience with activity at this Center.
Since opening in September the S. Detroit Street Recycling Center has been a popular and well used facility. The volume of material being collected has doubled each of the first three months of operation. By year end 28 tons of paper, 12 tons of co-mingle, and 7 tons of cardboard had been collected. In all 48.55 tons of material have been recycled from the S. Detroit Street Center. This is much busier that the second busiest Recycing Center in Lakeview, where 109 tons of material were recycled in the first 15 months of operation. Thank you for recycling.
